Holy Spirit - Receive It

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them.

“No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

“Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked.

And they replied, “The baptism of John.”

Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”

As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tonguesb and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all.
— Acts 19:1-7

In order to receive the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit you must first desire it. My prayer is that you begin to understand the incredible need and importance of this God given gift. In Acts 19 we see the urgency of being filled with the Spirit. It was the first thing Paul had mentioned when coming to the disciples in Ephesus. There, Paul laid hands on them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Remember that the next time someone says the Holy Spirit is an optional thing for believers.

Acts 10:44 says, “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.” Here we have an account on people who received the Holy Spirit by simply listening to the Word of God.

Luke 1:41 says, “At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” Here’s an example of someone being filled with the Holy Spirit by a greeting!

This wonderful gift can be imparted to you by the laying on of hands, the preaching and teaching of God’s Word or by simply opening your heart to receive it!

Here are a couple of things I’ve learned from my personal experience.

  1. It doesn’t matter how bad you want it, if you’re trying to rationalize it with your head, you won’t receive it.

  2. The Holy Spirit won’t highjack your tongue. Isaiah 28:11 says, “For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.” You must yield your tongue! In other words, quit speaking in English, Spanish or whatever natural language you’re fluent in! When I was first baptized it started off as slight trembling noise. When I got home that night it was as though the heavens opened and the Spirit of God descended on me like a dove! I was speaking in tongues with fire! The first thing I had to do was SURRENDER and continue to exercise this gift.

  3. Don’t beg. God listed Speaking in Tongues in 1 Corinthians 12:28 as a GIFT. A gift is something someone WANTS to give you. No special requirements needed. No extra credit needed. God’s desire is for EVERYONE to receive this! Quit asking for it and simply believe and receive!

  4. Kill your pride. Do you care more about what people think? Re-read this series and establish once and for all the fact that you NEED this gift working on the inside of you!

Pastor Allen Hawes once said a believer without the Spirt is no more powerful than a car without an engine. I congratulate you on a life full of God’s power and wisdom. Your life, will never, EVER be the same. God Speed.
